Hombroich : Freiwillig is an active and constantly changing group of volunteers – freiwillig means ‘voluntary’ in German – who have been instrumental in preserving and protecting the natural surroundings with great passion and enthusiasm for over 20 years.

Working together

In October 2001, Hildegard Heerich (artist and wife of fellow artist Erwin Heerich), Marie-Luise Bretschneider (one of the very first supporters of Insel Hombroich) and Dutch nature and landscape advisor Gerrit Vink initiated the first Volunteer Days at Insel Hombroich, together with resident landscape architect Burkhard Damm. This laid the foundations for a group that has been meeting up regularly for years with a constant influx of new members.

On the first Saturday of each month, volunteers roll up their sleeves and get to work on the foundation’s grounds under the guidance of one of the gardeners – a communal event that continues to attract plenty of eager volunteers to this day. Hombroich : Freiwillig also helps out in other areas such as looking after the collection and foundation archives and assisting with events.
