An oriental tent on the sea

Ursula Schulz-Dornburg (born 1938) has been taking photo­graphs primarily in Asia and the Near East of specific struc­tures that are signi­fi­cant in their given cultures and at the same time preca­rious. With Curtains on Piazza San Marco in Venice (1973) and Palace Pier, Brighton (1976) the Stiftung Insel Hombroich is now exhi­bi­ting the the photographer’s first groups of works. The two projects introduce her enga­ge­ment with archi­tec­tural struc­tures and spatial complexes whose survival is uncertain. Here, both analog and in black-and-white, Ursula Schulz-Dornburg devotes herself to the one spot in a city that defines its coll­ec­tive conscious­ness. At first glance very different—here an exposed engi­nee­ring structure, there a repe­ti­tive piazza facade—the two archi­tec­tures, built over piling, have risen above the water, and forming sceno­gra­phic spaces by such simple means as boards and fabric, present surpri­sing simi­la­ri­ties. We see these outstan­ding tourist sights in a clarity now lost.
Curtains on Piazza San Marco in Venice was published in 1974 (Studio Dumont, Cologne) and exhibited in 1975 in the galleries Heiner Friedrich, Munich, and Wittrock, Düssel­dorf. Palace Pier, Brighton was published in 1976 (Studio Dumont, Cologne) and exhibited in that same year in the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Museum in Krefeld
Both projects were developed in colla­bo­ra­tion with Katharina Sattler, whose archi­tec­tural drawings are also being shown in the exhi­bi­tion.

The work series Sonnen­stand (1991) by Ursula Schulz-Dornburg is perma­nently installed  in one of the Drei Kapellen in the Kirkeby Feld.
