Tomas Riehle (1949–2017) devoted decades of photo­gra­phic contem­pla­tion and explo­ra­tion to the walk-in sculp­tures and buildings at Hombroich, creating spot-on, decidedly memorable images that inscribe them­selves in the mind with a clarity one may safely call iconic. Now Stiftung Insel Hombroich dedicates a survey show to this photo­grapher, covering a life’s work given to manifold artistic explo­ra­tion of space both built upon and – archi­tec­tu­rally – ‘empty’. On view are photo­graphs from such diverse groups of studies as Lichtraum Akademie (1975), or Landwaage (1979), Riehle’s master­piece in Erwin Heerich’s sculpture class and a most powerful trans­la­tion of unlimited space into the two-dimen­sional plane; or his long-term project, Rhein­brü­cken (1994–2002), which looks at bridges in their changing environs from the source of the Rhine to its mouth. Working prints with manu­script anno­ta­tions, from a 1977 photo­gra­phic series on Mies van der Rohe’s Haus Lange at Krefeld visually retrace Riehle’s way of creative precision toward his pictorial findings.
