Painter Michael Growe was born in Warburg in 1960. In 1995, Karl-Heinrich Müller suggested that he set up a studio in one of the three hangars at Raketenstation Hombroich. Georg Schmidt also moved into this hall at the same time. Michael Growe’s main focus is on the physicality of painting. His plinth-less bodies of colour expand this physicality into real space, sometimes even serving as furniture and regularly exploring what the medium of painting can achieve in this day and age. His works are also imbued with subtle irony at times. Michael Growe is involved in many events at Hombroich, including organising the guest artist programme and collection exhibitions. He also initiated the Wachhaus series and was instrumental for many years in the interaction with the free art scene in China.

Michael Growe studied at Kunstakademie Düsseldorf and held many exhibitions in Europe and China. He also lectured at numerous German and international educational establishments, including the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing and Shanghai.
